Supplement for Reduction of Cardiovascular Disease on Trial

      Volume: 11 (09/11/2005)
PBM Pharmaceuticals Inc. announced yesterday that it is conducting a clinical trial of the active supplement Animi-3®, designed to study the related cardiovascular risk reduction.

Animi-3® is a prescription-only product that contains specially formulated and highly refined omega-3 fatty acids as well as folic acid, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12.

The six-month, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study is conducted by Dr. Ernst J. Schaefer, M.D., of Cardiovascular Research Associates, in Boston, MA and Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine. It started in September 2005 and has 75 participants, aged 55-80, with no prior history of dementia.

Since studies published in peer-reviewed journals have reported that patients with heart disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and depression may be deficient in omega-3 fatty acids, folic acid, and vitamins B6 and B12, this supplement will be beneficial for these patients.

Apart from studying the decreases in triglycerides, homocysteine, and small dense LDL, and the increases in large HDL, scientists will investigate the effects of Animi-3® on C-Reactive protein as well as the measures of cognitive functions, including memory and executive function.

"The ingredients in Animi-3 benefit cardiovascular disease, cognition, and rheumatoid arthritis", says Dr. Barbara Levine, of Weill Medical College of Cornell University, involved with the launch of the product. Dr. Levine is an expert on nutritional interactions between genetics and the prevention of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer. "Scientists and clinicians at Cornell University are actively prescribing the product and following up with patients on Animi-3", she adds.

Dr. Schaefer, lead researcher in the study, is a renowned expert in cardiovascular risk, lipoproteins and nutrition. His team, including Dr. Jim McGrath, co-creator of Animi-3®, considers him to be the "perfect investigator to further explore the health benefits of Animi-3".
